In certain emergency situations, you might be asked by authorities to Shelter-in-place. Sometimes the best way to stay safe means that you should get inside and stay put. Get inside as soon as possible and bring your loved ones, emergency supplies and your pets if possible. You should stay until local officials say it is safe to leave. Remember that shelter-in-place is used as a means of protection for usually only a short time and not for days or weeks.

If you are at home when the emergency occurs, you will need to lock all doors and windows, close the fireplace damper and turn off all fans and any HVAC systems. Collect containers filled with fresh water, your family survival kit and a working radio with fresh batteries and move to a small room above ground level with few windows or doors. Your family survival kit should include emergency food, water and emergency lighting. Close all window shades, blinds or curtains if an explosion is a possibility. If you decide to bring your pets along, be sure to take your dog survival kit (or cat survival kit) with you. A good pet survival kit should include medical supplies, a feeding bowl, pet waste bags, emergency food, water pouches and a survival blanket. Be prepared to seal off the room from outside air with duct tape and plastic sheeting if there is the possibility of outside air contaminants.

If you are caught out in your vehicle and too far away to get back home or to a public building, it is safer to pull over and stay in your car than to keep driving. Stop your vehicle in the safest place possible and turn off your engine. If it is warm outside, try to stop under a bridge or shady spot so you don’t get overheated. Listen to your radio and wait until officials say it is safe to get back on the road. A roadside emergency kit such as the Family Auto Survival kit is equipped with an emergency survival blanket, 16-hour body warmer, flashlight and enough food and water for 72 hours. The purchase of a good roadside emergency kit is an absolute must and should be kept inside your vehicle at all times.
