If you live in a part of the country where tornados are fairly common, then you already how dangerous and catastrophic they can be. Tornados can leave awide swath of chaos and destruction in their wake leaving thousands without power, communication and often times without proper shelter.
Establish an emergency plan with your family. This is especially important if you have children that may be separated from you at the time of the storm. For small children this can be especially important.
Dedicate a storage area in your home, preferably inside a tornado shelter (or an interior closet if one is not available), with the things that you would need in the emergency. This should include a good flashlight, batteries, water, non-perishable food, a good emergency weather radio and a First Aid Kit. A good way to make sure you have everything you need is to purchase a Tornado Survival Kit that includes everything just mentioned and more. Another great tip; put some of all the medications you take inside a plastic bag and keep it inside the First Aid Kit.
